Bear Creek Pioneers Park
Bear Creek Pioneers Park, at 3535 War Memorial Drive, is the heart of the area. Harris County leased 2,154 acres of the Addicks Reservoir in 1965 and developed it into a park. Today it has hike-and-bike and equestrian trails, sports fields used by local leagues, picnic areas, a dog park, the Harris County War Memorial, and even a small zoo.
There’s an important detail many newcomers don’t know: the park sits inside a flood-control reservoir. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built Addicks Dam in the 1940s to protect Houston from flooding on Buffalo Bayou, and the park is designed to hold water when needed. During Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the reservoir reached its record high water level and much of the park was underwater.
