ZIP code distance calculator: this free tool measures the distance between any two Texas ZIP codes in miles and kilometers, shows both locations on a map, and tells you the direction from one to the other. How to calculate the distance between two ZIP codes
- Enter the starting ZIP code in the From box, for example 77002 for downtown Houston.
- Enter the destination ZIP code in the To box, for example 75201 for downtown Dallas.
- Press Calculate distance. You’ll see the distance in miles and kilometers, the city and county of each ZIP code, the direction, whether both are in the same city or county, and a map with a line between them.
- Swap or copy. Use the swap button to reverse the trip, or Copy result to paste a one-line summary into an email or document.
How to calculate many distances at once
Switch to Many pairs (bulk) when you have a list. Each line needs two ZIP codes, separated by a space, comma, or tab. That means you can copy two columns straight from Excel or Google Sheets and paste them in. For example:
77002, 7520178701 78205- Two columns pasted from a spreadsheet (tab-separated)
Press Calculate all and the tool returns a table with each pair’s cities and distance in miles and kilometers. Lines it can’t read, or that use ZIP codes outside Texas, are clearly marked instead of breaking the whole list. Then press Download CSV to save the results, ready to open in Excel or Google Sheets.

Straight-line distances between the center points of each ZIP code. Driving distances are longer.
How big is Texas, measured by ZIP code?
Using the center points of Texas’s street-address ZIP codes, the state’s extremes look like this:
- Northernmost: Booker (79005), in the Panhandle’s Lipscomb County
- Southernmost: Brownsville (78521), in Cameron County
- Easternmost: Burkeville (75932), in Newton County near the Louisiana line
- Westernmost: Anthony (79821), in El Paso County near the New Mexico line
From Burkeville in the east to Anthony in the west is about 765 miles in a straight line, and from Booker in the north to Brownsville in the south is about 749 miles. The two Texas street-address ZIP codes farthest apart are Brownsville (78521) and Texline (79087) in the northwest corner of the Panhandle, about 792 miles apart.
How the distance is calculated
Every ZIP code in our data has a center point with a latitude and longitude. The calculator measures the shortest path between two center points across the curved surface of the Earth, using the great-circle (haversine) formula with the Earth’s average radius of about 3,959 miles. It’s the same method most ZIP code distance tools use, and it matches the distance a plane would cover flying directly between the two points.
Kilometers use the exact conversion of 1.609344 kilometers per mile. The direction (for example, “75201 is north of 77002”) is the general compass direction from the first ZIP code to the second, rounded to one of eight directions.
Straight-line vs driving distance
Straight-line distance is always the shortest possible distance, so real road trips are longer. Highways curve, cities route traffic around downtowns, and rivers, lakes, and bays add detours. That’s why straight-line distance is best for comparing places, estimating shipping zones, and sorting lists by proximity, while a mapping app is best for turn-by-turn driving directions and travel times.
It also helps to remember that a ZIP code is an area. Two addresses on either side of a shared ZIP boundary can be much closer than the distance between the two ZIP codes’ centers.
Who uses a ZIP code distance calculator?
- Online sellers and shippers estimate how far orders travel and compare fulfillment locations.
- Field service and sales teams plan territories and assign jobs to the nearest technician or rep.
- Movers and families relocating compare how far a new home is from work, school, or relatives.
- Recruiters and HR teams check commuting distance for candidates.
- Analysts add a distance column to spreadsheets of customer or store ZIP codes using bulk mode.
