A short history of Spring Branch
Spring Branch’s story starts in the 1840s, when German settlers arrived, drawn by fertile farmland and the spring-fed creek that gave the area its name. Their heritage lives on in local street names like Gessner, Hillendahl, and Witte, and in St. Peter Church on Long Point Road, one of the last buildings left from those pioneer days. Houston annexed Spring Branch in stages during the 1940s and 1950s, and it grew into a classic postwar suburb.
Spring Branch today
Today Spring Branch is one of Houston’s most diverse areas. Long Point Road is especially well known for Korean barbecue, and the stretch is often called Houston’s “Koreatown,” with Latin American restaurants and shops just as common along the same roads. Older ranch homes on big lots sit next to new townhomes, and prices have risen quickly as more buyers discover how close the area is to central Houston.
